International Hunting News

Dallas Safari Club lion policy adopted by International Council

Once again, this is a fine example of hunters being the true conservationists they are.

A recent international assembly of conservationists representing 84 countries adopted an African lion-hunting policy modeled after one advanced earlier this year by the Dallas Safari Club.

Recently, the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation credited DSC for early and ongoing leadership in urging lion hunters to self-impose harvest restrictions.

Previously, DSC published its new definition of the recommended huntable male lion. More than 70 major safari operators and hunting industry leaders pledged their support. The new standard for huntable male lions  is “at least six years of age and is not known to head a pride or be part of a coalition heading a pride with dependent cubs."

Overharvest of young male lions could reduce lion populations overall, and such reductions in numbers would lead wildlife authorities to reduce quotas. Research  shows hunting older male lions has no negative effect on future populations.

DSC announced "Hunting only non-pride and non-adolescent male lions should be the goal of every hunter and every organization with a vested interest in conserving lion populations."

DSC also noted no member would be eligible for any awards for harvest of a male lion if it did meet the age criteria established by DSC.

U.S. Hunters traveling abroad with firearms

If your planning to leave the country on a hunting trip with a firearm this form is necessary for you to have.

  • Call your local US Customs office and give them your name and let them know you intend to go hunting abroad and will be visiting their office with your hunting firearm to fill out a US Customs form 4457. This way, they are expecting you.
  • Go to your local U.S. Customs office and fill out and sign this form, and have it signed and stamped by US customs prior to arriving at the airport with your firearm for your departure. When entering a US Customs office or any airport with a firearm you intend to take on a hunting trip- BE SMART!
    • Carry the firearm in a hard, locked gun case
    • Bolt out, action open
    • Unloaded
    • No ammo in the case along with the firearm or on your person
  • Approach the US Customs office. Be courteous and notify them you are traveling abroad for a hunting trip and need assistance completing a customs form 4457. They will assist you from there.

Forget cold tents and freeze dried food, sleep on a yaught, great meals, warn beds, hunt in style!

Our mountain goat hunts are conducted during late September aboard our private yacht. When not on the mountain pursuing goats we are living in comfort aboard the yacht where our full-time cook keeps us fed and the t.v. plays a good Western. These are true trophy mountain goat hunts. We harvest strictly large billies with long furred hides. We do not shoot female or small goats ever. The mountain goats in this area are an underutilized resource and provide a first class hunt. We limit this area to very few hunts a year, and the results speak for themselves. Abundant black bears in this area catch salmon in the streams near the yacht and can be combined with goats as an additional trophy.
